John Dupret Painter - Illustrator
John DuPret is a lover of early erotic photography, and has, for over 25 years collected a large archive spanning the period 1850 – 1940. (See the book “Dark Sex”).
Many of the early photographers are known – the fetish imagery of Biederer and the salacious lewdity of Grunworth for instance, whilst others are anonymous.
In addition some of the brothels in the infamous Rue Lepic in the Montmartre region of Paris offered perverse “scenarios” for clients to watch, and take part in – and created their own photographs showing these to arouse clients and offer a purchasing choice to a client, as well as selling the photographs as souvenirs.
Many of these early photographs have found their way into the DuPret archive, and from these he has created “Rue-Lepic” - a series of six limited edition prints, based on the photographs created by the brothels themselves.
The other six limited edition prints were inspired by images in the archive - explicit, perverse and pornographic photographs were created as far back as 1840, and DuPret has recreated the eroticism of these early images.
In addition he has added his own intensely intricate details – wallpapers, fabrics, furniture and fittings, to create exquisite “miniatures” with an exquisitely voyeuristic feeling.
These were originally created as a limited edition of 25 prints of each. He is now offering the prints that are left from these editions as signed but unnumbered prints. Very few are left of each.
The original artwork uses watercolour, gouache, pen and ink – the prints are chromogenic.
(Note: Modern Archival Chromogenic inks are superior to the Giclee process, as they are made of pigment not dye, so the final result can be nearly identical to the original, with a similar lifespan)
Each signed print is £25.00. plus postage.
Paper size is 29.7 x 21 cm – the images vary in size.
In some cases, the original artwork is available for £150.00.
(Reproduction rights stay with John DuPret).
